TRIC carried out an official ODA project commissioned by the Northeast Asian History Foundation, restoring the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Afrosiab Palace and Murals in Uzbekistan—an important cultural link between Korea and Central Asia. From 2013 to 2018, TRIC collaborated with the Samarkand Institute of Archaeology and the Afrosiab Museum to digitally reconstruct the 7th-century murals of the Afrosiab Palace. These murals vividly depict the political, religious, ceremonial, diplomatic, and everyday life of the Sogdians, the ruling class of the time. The content was developed into immersive 3D media, including AR and VR experiences. The final content is currently on display at the Afrosiab Museum in Samarkand and is available in eight languages: Korean, Uzbek, Russian, English, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Chinese. Even after the project’s completion, TRIC has continued providing technical support and updating the content. On October 30, 2018, TRIC and the Afrosiab Museum signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to further collaborate on new initiatives themed around the Afrosiab murals and archaeological site.
