TRIC produced the '2021 Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty Immersive Content' commissioned by the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center in 2021.
To allow users to freely explore and learn about the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, the royal tomb spaces were reconstructed in a virtual environment based on 3D modeling. Interactive content was developed to provide an engaging experience of the historical stories associated with the enshrined monarchs—often referred to as the core heritage value of the royal tombs—including experiencing traditional ancestral rites and virtually building a royal tomb.
This content is presented with a storyline where an exploration team from the future travels back in time to uncover the secrets behind the establishment of the royal tombs, exploring how these sacred sites were enshrined and preserved through long periods of adversity. Implemented as user-interactive storyscaping across a total of four royal tombs—Mongneung, Yungneung, Seolleung, and Sungneung—each site features distinct genres and narratives. We integrated gamified event elements onto high-quality, three-dimensionally rendered spatial exploration content of the Joseon royal tombs.
Led by Postmedia, this project was produced through a consortium consisting of DEXTER Studios and TRIC. Our institute established 3D spatial scanning and modeling data for a total of seven king and queen tombs located across Mongneung, Yungneung, Seolleung, and Sungneung, which was essential for content creation. Data was acquired through field surveys, aerial photography, and 3D terrestrial scanning. Based on our cultural heritage expertise, we built optimized final data verified through platform-specific data loading simulations for VR content utilization.
To overcome physical space limitations and the reliance on dedicated devices typical of VR content, these final outputs were developed to render 3D modeling data directly through web browsers. They can also be viewed as 360-degree VR videos on the Cultural Heritage Channel (K-HERITAGE TV) YouTube channel.
