From 2021 to 2022, in partnership with NDS, TRIC led the creation of a 3D database for 1,460 nationally designated and registered cultural properties across Gyeongsangbuk-do, Daegu, Gyeongsangnam-do, Busan, Ulsan, and Jeju. The total project budget was KRW 28.188 billion. On March 11, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that to realize the goals of the Korean New Deal and lead a nationwide digital transformation in the preservation, management, and use of cultural heritage, it will invest a total of KRW 71.3 billion by 2025. This initiative aims to construct a 3D digital database for approximately 4,000 national cultural assets across the country (excluding paper-based heritage). The project captures cultural properties with non-contact digital acquisition methods—such as ground and aerial broadband and precision laser scanning, photogrammetry, hyperspectral and thermal optical sensors—without physical damage. These methods document and digitize not only the accurate dimensions, shape, color, and texture of objects but also minute, invisible details at millimeter-level precision and gigapixel resolution. The digital assets created through this project will be permanently preserved as foundational records for restoration in the event of disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, wildfires, or arson. Additionally, because these 3D records replicate cultural assets with high fidelity, they can be repurposed across sectors as source content for immersive media, online education, tourism, webtoons, games, films, exhibitions, and design.
