A Flagship Brand for Promoting Korean Culture

Three leading Korean cultural institutions— the National Museum of Korea, the National Gugak Center, and the National Asian Culture Center—partners to unveil online content introducing Korean tradition

Since October 2021 through April 2022, the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has been actively hosting “Korea Contents Week,” a global showcase of Korean cultural content. In the <Introduce; K-Heritage> section, three major Korean cultural institutions unveiled contactless content that reinterprets Korea’s traditional cultural heritage through a modern lens. The National Museum of Korea presented “Dreams of the Joseon People: Pyeongsaengdo”, a digital restoration of the iconic “Pyeongsaengdo” folding screen. Accompanied by a video featuring broadcaster Daniel Lindemann, this content highlights the digital restoration process. “Pyeongsaengdo” depicts eight ideal moments in life as envisioned by people of the Joseon Dynasty, offering valuable insights into the lifestyle and social values of 18th–19th century Korea. Such a visual narrative of a single life cycle is uniquely found in Korea. The National Gugak Center for Folk Music introduced an online reinterpretation of Korea’s five representative pansori epics—Heungbo-ga, Jeokbyeok-ga, Sugung-ga, Simcheong-ga, and Chunhyang-ga—through modern genres. The project featured DJ FENNER, an active global artist from 12 countries, who helped bring the vibrancy of pansori to a worldwide audience. The Asia Culture Center (ACC) showcased “BBRUN,” an immersive metaverse performance combining advanced technology with Korean traditional culture. Performed by master practitioners of Goseong Ogwangdae, a designated Important Intangible Cultural Property known for its dynamic mask dance, the production fuses 5G, motion capture, facial tracking, and VR/AR to create a real-time interactive experience between performers and audiences in separate locations. This innovative format makes traditional Korean performance accessible and enjoyable for all generations. In the <Participate; KOCOWEEK EVENT> section, global SNS-based contests like “Create Your Korean Name” and “Hanbok Coloring Challenge” are ongoing. The <Meet; Overseas KCC Festivals> section brings Korean culture to the public through events in seven countries—including the U.S. (LA), Russia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Belgium, and France—in collaboration with their local Korean Cultural Centers. Ambassador Jeon Somi joined the initiative, drawing wide attention both domestically and internationally with online content appearances. Further information on Korea Contents Week is available on the official website.
