The dragons of Baekje brought to life
TRIC designed the contents for <An Imaginary Bestiary, The Dragon of Baekje> special exhibition at the Gongju National Museum. The project reinterprets the symbolic and aesthetic power of dragons found in Baekje artifacts through the design that makes visitors feel as though they were stepping into a “magical book”.
Exhibition design: from imagination to reality
The experience of encountering Baekje’s dragons begins from the moment visitors enter the exhibition hall. When a book is placed on a candlelit table, video content that shows illustrated catalogue of relics unfolds on a large screeng. The video based on the high-resolution 3D scan data allows the viewers to appreciate fine details and history of each artifact too detailed to be seen through naked eye. The exhibition visualizes dragon motifs in Baekje artifacts such as the Silver Cup with Lotus Design, the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner, and Queen Muryeong’s Silver Bracelet. Part 1 explores the origins and symbolic meanings of dragons, tracing their archetypes through ancient relics. Part 2 presents dragon imagery rendered in three dimensions through Baekje artifacts such as gilt-bronze shoes, coronets, and ring-pommeled swords. Part 3 highlights the dragon as a symbol of authority and introduces its evolving significance in Buddhist and Daoist contexts throughout history. Following the planned route, visitors can go beyond passive viewing to actively explore Baekje’s dragons in an immersive experience.
