Reflecting on the true meaning of the Taegukgi

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, TRIC partnered with the National Museum of Korea to produce the immersive digital artwork Denny's Taegeukgi. This animation project aims to rekindle public appreciation for Korea’s national flag through the story of the Denny's Taegeukgi—the oldest surviving Taegeukgi, crafted in 1890. The video opens with shadows cast by the Japanese Government-General, symbolizing the hardships that befell the Korean Empire. But soon, rays of hope break through, and the flag begins to rise again, gradually regaining its vibrant colors. The swirling Taegeuk, the harmonizing trigrams of Geon, Gon, Gam, and Ri, and the white field representing peace are vividly brought to life. As the sun fully rises into a clear blue sky, the flag waves powerfully in reclaimed peace. TRIC captured the essence of this story within a minute, using variations in light and shadow, fabric textures, and dynamic camera angles to express the flag’s enduring spirit.

The Oldest Surviving Taegeukgi in Korea: The Denny's Taegeukgi

The Denny's Taegeukgi is a national treasure bestowed by Emperor Gojong upon Owen N. Denny, an American who served as a diplomatic advisor to the Korean Empire. Designated as an official treasure in 2021, it is the largest of the early Taegeukgi flags still in existence and provides critical insight into the flag’s original design. Made before the proclamation of the Korean Empire, the Denny's Taegeukgi reflects Gojong’s aspirations for an independent nation. Currently housed at the National Museum of Korea, this project marks the first time its form and spirit have been revived through digital technology.

Hyperreal Physicality via TRIC’s Proprietary H-PBR Pipeline

To recreate the flag’s lifelike textures, TRIC used self-developed H-PBR (Heritage Physically Based Rendering) pipeline. This system meticulously simulates visual properties such as reflectivity, curvature, and translucency. Using a cloth simulation and volumetric lighting engine, the animation realistically portrays the flag’s fluid motion and light scattering in space—breathing life into an otherwise static artifact. The visuals are optimized for both real-time rendering and post-production environments.

Anamorphic Illusion and Score

On the massive Shinsegae Square media screen, the artwork employs an anamorphic illusion technique to create the effect of a giant Taegeukgi soaring across the sky. Enhancing the emotional impact is a majestic musical score composed by renowned musician Yang Bang-ean, amplifying the flag’s grandeur.

10.8-Gigapixel Scan Based on the ‘Cultural Heritage Digital Asset Standard Guidelines’

TRIC conducted a 10.8-gigapixel ultra-high-resolution scan to capture the materiality and symbolism of the Denny's Taegeukgi in full detail. The data captures everything from the fabric weave to faded dye, and was produced in accordance with the National Museum of Korea’s 2024 Digital Asset Standard Guidelines. This ensures compatibility with other commercial content and platforms. Color calibration and ICC profile matching were also performed to faithfully replicate the original artifact’s color profile.

From Preservation to Public Resonance

The Denny's Taegeukgi media artwork was shown every 10 minutes on the exterior mega-screen of the Myeongdong Shinsegae Department Store. It was screened all day long on the Korea Liberation Day, August 15. This project exemplifies how cultural heritage can transcend preservation to become an immersive digital experience that resonates with the public’s memory and emotion. Moving forward, TRIC will continue to unlock the value of national heritage, setting new standards for the innovation.
