Official Digital Heritage Content of the Silla Capital for 2025 APEC

Bringing the thousand-year capital Gyeongju back to the world stage for APEC 2025: TRIC has produced the official digital restoration film Echoes of a Millennium, A World in Harmony for the APEC Summit, recreating ancient Soabol — the cosmopolitan capital of Silla — through digital heritage technologies. The work begins with the sound of the Bell of King Seongdeok. Across a millennium, the bell’s resonance connects Gyeongju’s historic spirit of global exchange along the Maritime Silk Road with today’s gathering of 21 APEC nations, expanding into a shared message of connection, innovation, and prosperity. Over the past decade, TRIC has built an extensive digital archive of the Silla capital. Using this data — together with real strike recordings of the Bell preserved by the National Museum of Gyeongju — TRIC crafted a monumental media wall installation spanning 50 meters in width and 4 meters in height. To visualize the bell’s unique acoustic phenomenon, maknori, TRIC used AI-driven sound-data visualization, transforming resonance into living waves of light and motion. Silla’s lost cityscape — including Hwangnyongsa Temple, Bunhwangsa Temple, Wolseong Palace, Woljeonggyo Bridge, and Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond — was digitally reconstructed in full three-dimensional scale, along with detailed restorations of gilt-bronze ornaments and celadon roof tiles that once gave Sorabol its title, “The Golden City.” The music was composed by world-renowned musician Yang Bang-ean, and sound design was led by Choi Taeyoung of LiveTone, recipient of the Golden Reel Award for Parasite and sound director for Mickey 17.

A moment of resonance shared by world leaders

The work premiered on October 27 at the National Museum of Gyeongju — the official venue of APEC 2025 — and at the K-Culture Museum in Incheon International Airport, drawing global attention during the APEC leaders’ week. On October 29, U.S. President Donald Trump passed in front of the 50-meter Sorabol digital restoration with the royal procession, creating a majestic scene. On November 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping walked through the same space, where the echoes of Silla met the resonance of the present world stage. TRIC’s Echoes of a Millennium, A World in Harmony reinterprets heritage through the union of tradition and technology, transforming historical memory into a cultural resource for the future. Powered by a decade of accumulated data, cutting-edge digital capability, and artistic imagination, this project stands as a landmark achievement, presenting Korea’s digital-heritage vision to the world through APEC 2025.

Powered by the “Sorabol 1000” Real-Time World Project

This film is built upon TRIC’s decade-long Sorabol 1000 project — a real-time digital reconstruction of the Silla capital, updated continuously through cross-verified historical records, archaeological findings, and site data. Sorabol 1000 reconstructs the capital’s urban grid, palaces, temples, waterways, and topography in a real-time render environment, allowing us to direct a consistent sense of scale, light, and depth — and efficiently produce ultra-wide 12,800-pixel imagery. Designed as an evolving digital knowledge system, Sorabol 1000 is built for expansion across platforms. Beyond film production, the same core data can be redeployed in real time for AI pipelines, exhibitions, education, virtual tourism, and metaverse applications — establishing a sustainable digital-heritage infrastructure whose value increases over time.

A 50m wide digital reconstruction of the Silla capital

To accommodate the ceremonial procession of the two heads of state and ensure sufficient travel time, a 50-meter-long LED media wall was installed. TRIC produced an ultra-high-resolution motion piece at a width of 12,800 pixels. The camera movement and perspective were precisely designed based on the pace and route of the procession, creating a seamless experience in which the dignitaries appear to march down the central boulevard of ancient Sorabol. To maintain consistent perspective and depth across the full 50-meter span, TRIC carefully calibrated camera tracking, lighting alignment, and frame-rate control. Color and exposure were continuously adjusted to match outdoor natural light and on-site illumination, enabling the digital scene to blend naturally with the physical space and processional movement.
