TRIC developed a virtual reality (VR) experience based on the Gangseo Great Tomb, a masterpiece of late Goguryeo mural art. Using high-precision data established by the Northeast Asian History Foundation, TRIC produced detailed 3D models of each structural element and optimized them for use in both virtual and augmented reality environments. When the experience begins, users wear an HMD headset and hold a torch controller to enter the burial chamber. As the stone coffin platforms on either side of the floor descend underground, users can move freely inside the space. By illuminating the interior with the virtual torch, users can examine the Four Guardian Deities painted on the east, west, south, and north walls. When the torch is brought close to each mural, the depicted beasts come to life—Blue Dragon, Red Phoenix, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise and Serpent. Once all four are activated, a golden dragon emerges from the ceiling, swimming through the entire chamber in radiant light. As the intricate ceiling patterns begin to shift, the sky opens to reveal the spectacular Goguryeo constellation. Guided by the golden dragon, the user ascends into the heavens, marking the end of the immersive journey. The Gangseo Great Tomb VR Experience was first showcased at the Heritage Korea 2018 in September 2018.
