Overview of the project

In Iksan, North Jeolla Province, stand the remains of Mireuksa Temple — once the largest Buddhist temple of the Baekje Kingdom. Among the surviving artifacts is a fragmented stone lantern, believed to have stood in front of the temple’s western pagoda. Despite its historical and artistic value, the lantern had long remained in disassembled fragments, making it difficult to fully appreciate its original form or function.

Digital Simulation

Due to the weight and fragility of the actual stone components, physical restoration posed great challenges. Instead, TRIC implemented digital simulation techniques using 3D scanning and modeling technologies. This allowed researchers and visitors to observe how the lantern may have originally appeared, offering new insights into its historical context and sacred purpose.

Restoration Planning

To revive the significance of the lantern, TRIC analyzed 13 surviving stone fragments and digitally proposed a restoration plan. Through research into the architectural style of Baekje stone lanterns and comparative studies of similar artifacts, a detailed reconstruction was virtually modeled.
